Something pretty miraculous happens when we receive the quality of someone's presence. In a coaching relationship, we can mine deeper levels of feelings and needs in the presence of a good listener who is able to drop down, contain and make it safe for you to tell the truth about what is really happening with you. So much of what we tell ourselves about ourselves is not even true. Most of us are confused and we do not accurately reflect or self report the truth very well. Coaching helps us to develop a culture of inquiry, outside of shame and blame. It's the very basis of mental health: self reflecting without going into shame. Coaching can explore assumptions that make it hard to tell the truth and loosen the grip on the meaning that we've made, either subconsciously or consciously.
